Labaree mentions three purposes of education in his essay, “Public Goods, Private Goods: The American Struggle over Educational Goods.” He labels them as social efficiency, social mobility, and democratic equality. I believe the purpose of education I have in mind aligns most with the social efficiency and democratic equality goals.
